Yoga was originated in ancient India. It is debated that existence of yoga dates back to Indus Valley Civilization and Pre Vedic-Eastern States of India.

It is not specific to a particular age group. Anyone can practice yoga, be it a 12-year-old child or a 90-year-old person, a pregnant woman, fitness buffs or body builders. `

Practicing yoga, helps you find peace, relieve stress, untangle thoughts and gain more focus. Yoga also helps you become fit and active and fight various ailments.

Yoga stresses on Endurance and Flexibility. Various yogic postures help strengthening your body from inside out. This helps not just your aesthetics to look good but you yourself feel good as well. Yogic postures help strengthen your spine which is the core of your body from which everything else operates. Thus, a strong core with improved posture helps in reducing back, shoulder and neck pain.

Besides this yoga also helps in building mental endurance and physical stamina. It helps control anxiety and helps coping with stress and negative emotions. It has a soothing effect and helps one to calm down. Yoga also helps in strengthening lungs and heart muscles. It also helps fight depression, insomnia, inflammation, chronic pains and improve overall quality of life.

There are various types of Yoga known to mankind today:

  1. Hatha Yoga: It is based on asanas (postures) and pranayama (breathing techniques).

  2. Iyengar Yoga: It emphasis on precision and alignment in all postures.

  3. Kundalini Yoga: A perfect blend of spiritual and physical practice. Relies heavily on breathing techniques, meditations and chanting of mantras.

  4. Ashthanga Yoga: It involves a very physically demanding sequence of postures, so this style of yoga is not for the beginners.

  5. Vinyasa Yoga: It is a style of yoga characterized by stringing postures together so that you move from one to another, seamlessly, using breath. 

  6. Bikram Yoga: Also known as Hot Yoga, is ideally practiced in a room heated to 35–42 °C (95–108 °F) with a humidity of 40%.

  7. Yin Yoga: It is a slow-paced style of yoga, to help you find your inner peace, done with seated postures that are held for longer periods of time.

  8. Restorative Yoga: Focuses on body relaxation. Many of the postures are modified to be easier and more relaxing.

  9. Prenatal Yoga: It is carefully adapted for “mothers to be” and is tailored to women in all trimesters. It helps them prepare for labor and delivery.

  10. Anusara Yoga: It is a modern-day version of hatha yoga, most similar to vinyasa yoga, in that it focuses on alignment but with more focus on the mind-body-heart connection and different verbiage.

  11. Jivamukti Yoga: It is mainly vinyasa flow-style classes infused with Hindu spiritual teachings. At its core, this style emphasizes connection to Earth as a living being, so most Jivamukti devotees follow their vegetarian philosophy.
